Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Marine

We are looking for a strong and versatile Chief Operating Officer to lead JGH Marine’s building and delivery of vessels from small boats to midsize and larger vessels and ferries to customers in developing countries around the world.

The position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the building and delivery of vessels and ferries to JGH Marine customers in Africa.  The COO refers to the CEO of JGH Group and works in close corporation with JGH Marine’s project sales team and the Africa-based ship building team.

When a new vessel is signed; it is your responsibility to ensure that the ship building project runs according to plan, or better by identifying potential savings. This requires close monitoring of the project progress and project economy.

The typical tasks include:

  • Overall management of JGH Marine ship building staff in Africa
  • Bottom Line responsibility for all JGH Marine projects 
  • Working with and leveraging JGH Group functions to support JGH Marine business
  • Supplier engagement/planning & contract management (both customer and supplier) 

Your success criteria are good project management within the budget and on time.

The travelling activity is mostly to Africa and is expected to be minimum 80 days annually.

The ideal candidate

You come with several years of project management experience from shipbuilding or from a role as fleet manager with a shipping company. You could also come from project business in Africa, where you have been responsible for the delivery of technical turnkey projects. 

Regardless of your background, where you really stand out is in the areas of project management and contract management. In addition, you have a good commercial, and technical understanding, so that you can challenge the proposed solution.

Your experience has taught you that the success of projects is not only how you structure the deal, but more importantly how you manage the project delivery economically with the right sense of urgency. 

Being responsible for the building and delivery of vessels; it is important that you are a strong people leader and well experienced in running a business “by the numbers”.

You are a strong and patient communicator with full working proficiency in English verbal and written, and you might even speak other languages like Spanish or French, but English is the only requirement.

You are well-organized and with strong attention to detail as required to run a profitable and successful project business. You therefore also work with MS Office, MS Excel, and MS Projects at an advanced level.

Furthermore, you are robust, a team player, accountable and able to work independently combined with high self-motivation.

Besides being able and willing to travel extensively in Africa, you must also be willing to move to Kenya, if deemed to be optimal in the performance of the job.

From the company HQ in central Copenhagen, Denmark or from JGH’s local office in Nairobi, Kenya.
